I feel a sense of delight in watching birds disappear into a tree, and also in the colors that come to mind.
Each picture starts with an idea, in this case a tree filled with birds. This is the beginning of an adventure, where changes and unexpected surprises are expected and welcome.
The process itself begins with a rough sketch, painted directly onto canvas with earth-tones and turpentine. Over this base, painting continues in multiple layers with a limited palette of mineral based pigment.
The cast of characters are drawn from my original photography, and are mostly birds that live around our home – or at least stop by on their way to somewhere else.
