Taking her inspiration from life experiences, Chicago Artist Laura Lee Junge AKA M. Jackson firmly believes that "the most honest painting is what one knows". This is clearly a philosophy she transfers to both her canvas and sculpted works. Junge's chaotic childhood years due to her father’s bipolar illness were split between Minnesota and Oklahoma. On her own she applied and was accepted at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
After graduation Junge has exhibited across the United States, often winning awards and gleaning accolades for her unique interpretative work. She is currently the proprietor and "in house" artist at the Jackson Junge Gallery in Chicago. Despite the time constraints of the gallery, Junge maintains a heavy schedule of competitively juried art fairs across the country.
Breaking the boundary between 2D and 3D is at the core of my artistic practice. My work focuses on creating unique artworks that interweave painting and sculpture. At times, the sculpture inspires the painting; at other times, the painting drives the creation of the sculpture. By combining these two forms, I create finished pieces that are both dynamic and intriguing.
The three-dimensional aspects of my work engage viewers, drawing them closer both physically and mentally. Typically, my pieces begin as wall-mounted sculptures, with elements that often extend beyond the boundaries of the frame and artwork. This extension occurs in three distinct ways:
Sculpted elements flow onto the surrounding wall space, extending horizontally and vertically.
Elements protrude forward adhered to the surface of the piece.
Independent elements are suspended or rise from the ground, creating a dialogue with the main structure.
Through this process, I dissolve the traditional boundary between two dimensions, fostering a cohesive environment where different dimensions coexist. My goal is to create a sense of discovery and excitement, inviting viewers to fully immerse themselves in the artwork.
