I studied painting and earned a Fine Arts degree in Turkey. In 1995, I founded a successful hat company in Istanbul before moving to New York, where I am now based as a fashion and wearable art designer. My background in fine art and fashion has led me to experiment across many mediums, always returning to what I call the art of the body.
In Brooklyn, I began up-cycling discarded materials found in dumpsters—particularly long ribbon-like fabrics that inspired what became my signature Spiral works to wear. Each piece is created from one continuous strip of fabric that wraps and spirals around the body as an unending form, with no side seams. I primarily use stretch cotton that is easy to wear, hand washable, folds easily, and travels well.
Through this spiral concept, I explore the primordial relationship between art and the human body, searching for infinite beauty through movement and form. These garments find their final shape only when worn, revealing stillness and fluidity at the same time. The enigmatic fit of the Spiral dresses is flattering on every body type, celebrating natural curves and individuality.
My work has appeared in international magazines and on major award stages. A silk, hand-dyed batik dress I created was worn at the Golden Globe Awards for the TV series Lost. Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding wore my green-yellow Spiral dress in 2011, and my designs have also appeared at the Oscars and Emmy Awards.
After more than twenty years of evolving the Spiral style, I see these garments as expressions of empowerment, spirit, and generational beauty—art that moves with the woman who wears it.
My inspiration comes from the relationship between art and the human body. I am drawn to the spiral as a universal symbol found in nature, energy, and movement—from galaxies and shells to DNA and flowing water. The spiral represents continuity, growth, and timeless beauty, and it mirrors the way fabric can move with a living form rather than against it.
