Michael Olshefski

About The Artist

Award-winning artist and architectural designer, Michael Olshefski, creates works of art inspired by nature, Eastern art and philosophy, and minimalist modern architecture and design. With over 20 years of architectural design and construction experience, Michael integrates these disciplines with his passion for precision craftsmanship and the art of making.

Foundational to every work of art he creates is the ancient art and philosophy of Wabi-Sabi. Wabi-Sabi is a recognition that all things/forms are impermanent and in a constant transition from existence to nonexistence.  For Michael, the Wabi-Sabi essence resides in the organic, warm, primal qualities of the highly figured natural wood he selects that form over its lifetime - a window into the life experiences of each tree. Michael freezes this transition between existence and nonexistence to capture that moment of the tree's life cycle and then synthesizes the rich, complex, organic forms of natural wood with crisp, clean minimalist modern features of metal, glass, leather and resin to create evocative, one-of-a-kind, exclusive works of art.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), where he was honored to receive the National AIA Certificate of Merit from the Henry Adams Foundation for design excellence. Throughout his architectural career he has been privileged to lead designs for numerous iconic projects such as the LA Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Otis College of Art and Design and the LA Griffith Observatory. As an artist, Michael has been published, awarded and recognized for his ability to combine design excellence and artistic sensibility to evoke a powerful yet serene state of mind through his work - a sense of harmony with nature that is peaceful and transcendent.
